Job Summary


The Associate Director of Student Involvement and Leadership is responsible for creating a dynamic student engagement experience with well-trained staff who are dedicated to student and leadership development. The Associate Director provides activities and programs to help cultivate a positive co-curricular program fostering student involvement, learning, and personal development. 

 

The Associate Director will be expected to work with colleagues to create an engagement model grounded in the Social Change Model of Leadership Development that reinforces UM-Flint’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. The Associate Director will assist with policies, standards, and goals for the department which are consistent with the mission and goals of the University and the Division of Student Affairs. The Associate Director represents the department through service on University and student committees.

Responsibilities*

Fraternity & Sorority Life

  • Provides visionary leadership for a comprehensive, vibrant sorority and fraternity community that enhances the student experience and fosters the development of each chapter within its founding values of scholarship, leadership, service and community. 
  • Directs the coordination of the formal and informal recruitment and membership intake for fraternities and sororities and ensures these processes are within the established guidelines.
  • Develops and maintains quality educational programs for fraternity & sorority community members focusing on leadership, risk management and risk-reduction education, sexual misconduct education, and hazing education.
  • Develops and implements short-term and long-range plans for fraternity and sorority life, including goals and priorities, assessment and evaluation efforts, and enacts strategies to achieve these priorities through the department, division, and university.
  • Collaborates with students, faculty, staff and alumni in the planning, development, and implementation of activities and programs that support and advance the foundational values upon which Greek-letter organizations are based.
  • Works in collaboration with the Faculty and Chapter Advisors to the fraternity and sorority chapters.
  • Serves as a liaison to international and national offices, chapter advisors, faculty advisors, alumni and members of the university community.
  • Provide direct oversight for the Fraternity and Sorority Life budget; includes monitoring the budget, preparation and submission of the annual budget and long-term planning documents/proposals.
  • Communicates the mission and vision of the program to the fraternity/sorority and university communities, international organizations, and the higher education profession.  
  • Communicates University policies and procedures to enable a collaborative effort between sorority and fraternity leaders, chapter and faculty/staff advisors, alumni, and the inter/national organization.
  • Maintains collaborative relationships with inter/national organizations that partner with the university to support chapters on the University of Michigan-Flint campus.
  • Coordinates the expansion and extension of new groups with undergraduate, alumni, volunteers and inter/national organization staff. 
  • Collaborates with the Student Conduct and Community Standards Director, advisors, and inter/national headquarters when responding to sensitive concerns and allegations around misconduct within the sorority and fraternity community.
  • Directs and implements polices to ensure the health and safety of the fraternity and sorority community including annual review and revision.
  • Provides oversight for all Fraternity and Sorority Life crisis management and communicates with the Dean of Students regarding students of concern. 
  • Work closely with University Advancement (including Alumni Relations) to actively engage alumni in mentoring and supportive relationships for sorority and fraternity members.
  • Advises three Fraternity and Sorority Life Councils and meets regularly with chapter Presidents.


Leadership Programming & Student Activities

  • Creates robust leadership programming that is developmentally and theoretically grounded and builds leadership skills and capacities from a student-development theory approach for varied student populations consistent with enrollment at the University of Michigan-Flint.
  • Coordinates, implements and provides oversight of leadership programs (Emerging Leaders, Inclusive Leadership Program, etc.), and workshops designed to support and develop student leaders, as well as the assessment of these initiatives.
  • Collaborates with a wide-range of campus partners to provide leadership development to campus-wide leadership positions, including but not limited to, Housing and Residential Life, Orientation, Club Sports, Recreation & Wellness, University Outreach, Admissions, Student Success Center, Women’s Educational Center, Ellen Bommarito LGBTQ Resource Center, Intercultural Center and Educational Opportunity Initiatives.
  • Assists with the leadership development within student organizations through intentional programming geared toward officer and organization development.
  • Coordinates and implements student organization advisor training (semi-annual), on-going advisor outreach through monthly meeting, and developing and maintaining resources for effective student organization advising.


Administrative

  • Assists with creating a robust campus environment by contributing to a strategic direction for the department, managing and implementing co-curricular student engagement opportunities and traditions including but not limited to Fall Welcome and Convocation, Mgagement Student Organization Fairs, etc.
  • Assist the Director with Admissions and Orientation related events and helps coordinate student representation.
  • Supervises, recruits, hires, trains, and assesses the job performance of assigned staff; includes developing training experiences and supervision strategies that provide skills, knowledge, and dispositions required to effectively meet established goals and objectives.
  • Supports the University of Michigan-Flint’s commitment to being an engaged, culturally inclusive campus through program development and individual professional development
  • Fosters an atmosphere of respect for individual differences and community values.
  • Engages and collaborates with Student Affairs staff, faculty leaders, and academic affairs administrators to link curricular and co-curricular experiences that contribute to students’ academic and personal success.
  • Provides resources and referrals for students and family members.
  • Effectively communicates with students, parents, administrators, faculty, and outside constituents.
  • Responds to requests and inquiries from University personnel, students, and parents and make appropriate referrals of inquiries to upper-level personnel.
  • Assists with department assessment and reporting.
  • Represents the office of Student Involvement & Leadership on appropriate university committees, meetings, and events.
  • Communicates and promotes University policy and procedures including departmental policies.
  • Meets regularly with supervisor and attends staff meetings.
  • Serves as a mandatory reporter (Clery Act) and responsible employee (Title IX) and immediately report related incidents according to federal mandates and university policies.
  • Reports all incidents of hazing and participates in all related investigations.
  • Works evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in college student personnel services, student affairs, higher education administration, or a related field is required
  • 5 years of professional experience working in fraternity and sorority life, leadership programming, student activities, or related higher education experience is required
  • Demonstrated knowledge and implementation of best practices in fraternity and sorority life, student activities and/or student leadership required.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience and the ability to motivate and lead a team is required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of student development issues in a post-secondary environment.
  • Proven strong communication skills.
  • Some budgeting and financial management knowledge and/or experience is required 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office required.

 

Additional Information

This position requires a flexible schedule with an occasionally heavy load of evening and weekend commitments, while maintaining a visible and predictable presence in the main office during a significant portion of the business hours.
