DESCRIPTION

 

The Department of Linguistics within the Division of Social Sciences at UC San Diego (http://ling.ucsd.edu/) is committed to building an excellent and diverse faculty, staff, and student body, and invites applications from candidates whose experience has prepared them to contribute to our commitment. The department is currently accepting applications for an Academic Coordinator for French in our Linguistics Language Program (LLP) (http://ling.ucsd.edu/language/index.html) for an initial two-year appointment beginning July 1, 2018, with the possibility of reappointment.

 

The Academic Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of our French program, including placement, course design, syllabi, assignment of grades, and materials development and selection, as well as training, supervision and evaluation of TAs. The Academic Coordinator conducts weekly TA meetings for each level, observes classes and meets with TAs individually to discuss their performance. In addition, the Academic Coordinator for French meets regularly with the Academic Coordinators for other languages, the LLP staff, and the LLP Director to set program goals, and establish and implement overall policies. This includes participation as a member of the planning team for our annual three-day workshop for TAs prior to the start of classes in September, in which the Academic Coordinator plays a role as presenter, trainer, and facilitator.

 

Basic Qualifications:


• Native or near-native command of French and good command of English
• The applicant must hold at least an M.A. (or equivalent) degree 
• A record of excellence in language teaching, 
• Vocabulary and knowledge of the grammar in the language equivalent to that of a university-educated speaker
• Familiarity (through residence, travel, and/or academic coursework) with the cultures where French is spoken
• Experience in designing a curriculum, establishing grading policies, and creating syllabi, lesson plans, tests and other content for French courses
• Experience in working with a diverse group of language program instructors and staff

 

Preferred Qualifications:


• Formal training in linguistics, second language acquisition, and/or language teaching.

 

Salary: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales
