DESCRIPTION

University of California, Davis seeks a leader to serve as the next Director of the Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM; http://ccm.ucdavis.edu ), and the endowed Robert Stowell Chair in Experimental Pathology. The Director/Stowell Chair will hold a professorial appointment in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, School of Medicine and a without salary appointment in a to-be-determined department in the School of Veterinary Medicine.

The CCM is a unique venture between the Schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine that
embraces the concept of “One Medicine”. The research mission of the CCM is to investigate the pathogenesis of human disease using animal models. Housed in a fully equipped research building with an active funding portfolio of over $48,000,000, the CCM’s 11 active faculty members conduct research using animal models with an emphasis on immunology and infectious diseases. Current areas of investigation include; [1] pathogenesis and the host immune response to HIV, Lyme disease, salmonellosis, cytomegalovirus, influenza, and Helicobacter pylori, [2] basic mechanisms of innate and adaptive immunity, [3] vaccine and anti-viral drug development, and [4] cancer biology. The CCM also oversees the UC Davis Mouse Biology Program (MBP) (http://mouse.ucdavis.edu) and is integrated with the adjacent California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC; https://www.cnprc.ucdavis.edu/).

The main responsibility of the CCM Director and Stowell Chair is to promote excellence and cohesion of research programs with the CCM and MBP and to connect these programs with basic and clinical research within the Schools of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and California National Primate Research Center. Specific responsibilities include: [1] providing strategic leadership for the CCM to build multi-disciplinary, extramurally-funded research programs focused on the pathogenesis of human disease using animal models; [2] overseeing and managing staff and facilities within the CCM to support research programs, [3], active participation with the School of Medicine’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine to strengthen connections and enhance research, education, and faculty development within both units, [4] integrating the CCM into teaching, research and service programs of both Schools, including mentorship of junior faculty and trainees [5], integrating the CCM into the larger UC Davis research mission.

The successful candidate must qualify for appointment at the Associate Professor/full Professor level with tenure, and maintain an active, extramurally funded research program that strategically aligns with the core CCM mission to investigate animal models of human disease. Specific research themes could include, but are not limited to, 1) infectious diseases, including the role of the microbiome; 2) immunologic mechanisms of disease, including immunopathogenesis, 3) vaccine and anti-viral drug development. The successful candidate will have 75% effort devoted to research. Candidates must have [1] MD, DVM, PhD, or combination of these degrees; [2] a broad understanding of modern biomedical science; [3] demonstrated administrative/leadership and mentorship skills; [4] an active and distinguished research record in the use of animal models to elucidate the mechanisms, prevention and/or treatment of human disease; [5] a nationally recognized reputation for career achievement and leadership; [6] an active extramural research funding that is transferable to UC Davis and experience in development of programmatic grants, and a commitment to work in securing additional funding for the programs of the Center.

The Stowell Chair in Experimental Pathology is a renewable appointment for a maximum of 12 years. The CCM Directorship is renewable beyond the period of the Stowell Chair.
