Description: Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Students & International Initiatives, the Director, International Education Centre is responsible for leading and managing the International Education Centre and its staff in the development of programs and services, which include: international student immigration advising, the University Health Insurance Program (UHIP), peer-based transition programming, intercultural development & learning, co-curricular and course-based international opportunities.

 

The Director will play a primary leadership role in the development and delivery of international student support services, intercultural development programming, and opportunities for co-curricular, study, research and work-integrated learning abroad for the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) campus. Liaising with academic and student service departments across UTM to ensure that the experiences reflect and capitalize on the academic and student service strengths of University of Toronto Mississauga. This will involve consulting broadly with the leadership of the University of Toronto St. George Centre for International Experience and Scarborough International Student Centre, to ensure that current and emerging initiatives address the priorities of UTM and align with the University of Toronto strategic goals and objectives, both domestic and abroad. The incumbent will have oversight for the implementation of safety & accessibility abroad policies and procedures related to programs abroad, training and issues-management, under the direction of the UofT Safety Abroad Office.

 

The Director will enact a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion through the continued development of an intercultural learning framework, working collaboratively with academic and student service departments, alumni, faculty, students, student groups, and other relevant internal and constituent groups. The Director will seek opportunities for integrative programming with others across the campus and University. The Director will seek partnership expansion and innovative program models with senior members from peer-institutions, non-governmental organizations, and not-for-profit groups around the globe, on behalf of the campus.



Qualifications: EDUCATION:

 

Graduate University degree, including studies in student affairs administration, higher education, international development, business, or a related discipline; or acceptable combination of education and experience.

 

EXPERIENCE:

 

A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible related experience in the areas of student development and/or international development, preferably at a post-secondary institution. Proven knowledge of best practices in international student support, mobility and program development. A commitment to diversity and inclusion as an integral component of a quality university experience, coupled with knowledge of current issues around access, equity and success for a diverse student population. Demonstrated experience in conflict resolution and crisis management. Demonstrated experience in student and community development. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in work and/or study in an international environment. Experience planning and managing a departmental budget. Experience managing staff in a unionized environment.

 

SKILLS:

 

Exceptional leadership, change management, and diplomatic skills along with a proven commitment to excellence in leading from a platform of diversity and high performance to achieve results and meet diverse stakeholder needs. Strong administrative skills, including strategic planning and evaluation, budgeting, financial management, and human resource management. Excellent relationship management skills, a high level of political acumen, and successful collaborative experience with key campus constituencies including students, faculty, staff, and community partners. Demonstrated consensus builder with a broad range of stakeholders, ability to work collaboratively across difference and employ effective conflict resolution skills. Strong communications skills in order to communicate, and present concepts to persons at all levels of the University. Effective presentation skills for small and large audiences. Working knowledge of Word and Excel and presentation technology. Strong analytical and organizational ability. Strong research (qualitative and quantitative) and assessment skills including program evaluation and performance assessments. Understanding of accounting principles and effective budget management skills. Proficiency in a wide range of computer applications, including data management.

 

OTHER:

 

Must have the ability to articulate a vision, and formulate action plans for the strong development of programs and services that enhance the student experience and student success at the post-secondary level. Must have a strong understanding and appreciation of academic values and a commitment to holistic student development. Ability to interpret and apply a broad range of institutional policies and procedures. Extensive knowledge of the post-secondary institution structures, systems, policies and values, an asset. Ability to solve difficult problems, across administrative structures. Ability to generate ideas for change or improvement in a collegial manner. Ability to make complex decisions under extreme pressure. Proven ability to exercise good judgment, initiative, and maintain confidentiality. Strong ability and commitment to remain current with emerging and prevailing trends and issues in international education.
